Here are some of the things caregivers could be faced with during the holidays.

Missing Out on Family Gatherings

You might be homebound with your loved one because he or she is unable to leave the home due to illness or injury. While you certainly understand the limitations you're faced with, you might be pressured by well-meaning family members to venture outside of the home "just for the day." Consider speaking to the family in advance of the difficulties of leaving the home. You might also consider asking them to stop by for an hour or two for a potluck.

Caregiver Burnout

The holidays can be stressful for everybody, regardless of their normal levels of stress. No matter how much you love or enjoy taking care of the person who needs you, caregiver burnout can happen. Be watchful of the signs of burnout, and take time for self-care. You might even find a day or two where you can take your loved one to respite care or have an in-home aide visit.

Unreasonable Expectations

Those who aren't in your shoes can't truly understand what you do every day or the things you do to provide the level of care that you do. It might be that your family hasn't seen your loved one for quite some time and the changes they've undergone are recognizable. Prepare them for this, and let them know ahead of time what changes your loved one has undergone since last time. He or she might only have enough energy to have visitors for a short amount of time, and anything beyond that is exhausting. This is another topic to discuss so that reasonable expectations are established. Make a list of concerns you have about visitors, and address them ahead of time.
