In his sequel to the popular The Art of Being a Healing Presence, James E. Miller describes what healing listening is and how it differs from other kinds of listening.
He explains that hearing is a result of our auditory system, but listening is a conscious choice to pay close attention to another person. There are many ways to listen: casually, therapeutically, for comprehension, critically, and for appreciation. Miller proposes a sixth approach: healing listening. This has more to do with being rather than doing. "When we listen to others in a healing way, we affirm the belief that they can become more complete as they express and claim what they have within them to say."
Three of the keys to healing listening are really listening, remaining in the moment, and keeping the other person's needs foremost. You listen with your ears, but also with your heart, your soul, your mind. Chapter titles include: "Healing listening involves a healing relationship that is lived out in an unequal way." "A healing listener listens with the third ear." "A healing listener listens single-mindedly...except when they don't."
The 27 short chapters provide helpful insights in how to do this special kind of listening. Interspersed throughout is the author's floral photography and meaningful quotations.
